A Secret Santa is not a simple shuffle

The Secret Santa generator draws names for a gift exchange quickly and fairly, with no repeats and no one drawing themselves. Type the group's names, click draw, and every person quietly gets one name to shop for.

A good draw matters more than people think. Paper slips get lost, the same two people end up gifting each other year after year, and somebody always ends up with their own name. A computerized shuffle handles the fairness in a click — and this one also avoids mutual pairs whenever the group size allows.

The two rules the draw has to satisfy

A Secret Santa is not a random shuffle. Two conditions have to hold at once: nobody may buy for themselves, and no pair of people may be drawn to buy for each other, because that turns a group exchange into a private swap and leaves everyone else out. The number of ways to arrange a group without anybody drawing themselves grows quickly, and the share of arrangements that qualify settles down at about 36.8 percent:

ParticipantsDraws where nobody gets themselvesShare of all orders
3233.3%
4937.5%
54436.7%
626536.8%
814,83336.8%

That 36.8 percent is not a coincidence: it is one divided by e, the same limit that turns up whenever you ask how many arrangements leave nothing in its original place. The practical consequence is that a random shuffle fails the first rule about two times out of three, which is why the tool shuffles and checks rather than shuffling once - and why it refuses to draw at all with fewer than three participants, since a group of two can only ever swap.

Entering names and drawing

  1. Type every participant's name, one per line — at least three names.
  2. Click Draw Secret Santa for a fair shuffle with no self-draws.
  3. Click Copy My Assignments to get one private text line per person to paste into the group chat.

Keeping the draw secret

The draw happens entirely in your browser: names are read from the box, shuffled, checked against both rules, and the result is shown as a list you can read out or screenshot. Nothing is sent anywhere, which also means nothing is stored - if you close the tab without copying the list, the draw is gone and you will have to run it again. That is usually the right trade for a gift exchange, and it is worth saying out loud to the group that no record exists.

One organisational habit makes the whole thing easier: draw once, then have everybody write down their own recipient immediately. Re-drawing because somebody forgot who they had is the most common way a Secret Santa stops being secret, and it is also unfair to the people who already started shopping. If you want a second draw for a different occasion, the draft order randomiser uses the same shuffling approach for a different problem, and for how this page is built and checked, see how we verify a tool.

The check-and-retry loop has a limit of four hundred shuffles, which sounds tight and is not. With three participants only two of the six possible orders satisfy the rules, so a single shuffle passes about a third of the time; the chance of four hundred shuffles all failing is about one in 10 to the power of 70. The limit exists so the tool can stop and tell you something is wrong instead of hanging, and the only way to reach it in practice is to enter names that cannot form a valid circle at all.

FAQ

How does the Secret Santa generator work?

Type every participant's name, click Draw, and the tool shuffles the names so each person gets someone else to buy for, with no repeats and nobody drawing themselves.

Can people see who they got?

No. Assignments appear only on your screen, and the Copy button sends each person a private one-line text with just their assignment.

Can two people draw each other?

The shuffle avoids mutual pairs whenever a valid draw exists, which is always true for groups of four or more. Larger groups can keep re-drawing with the button.
