A draw is only fair if every order is equally likely
Every fantasy football league has to answer one question before the season starts: who picks first? A fair, random draft order keeps the league honest and the draft drama-free. This tool shuffles your league's team names into a random order with one click, then shows a snake draft preview so everyone can see how the first three rounds will run.
It works entirely in your browser — no account, no upload, nothing saved. Enter your team names, randomize, and copy the results straight into your league chat.
How many ways can a draft order come out
A league that draws its order at random is choosing one arrangement out of every possible arrangement, and that count grows faster than most people expect. The table lists a few league sizes, with the chance of drawing the same order twice in a row:
| Teams | Possible orders | Chance of repeating the same order |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 24 | 1 in 24 |
| 8 | 40,320 | 1 in 40,320 |
| 12 | 479,001,600 | 1 in 479,001,600 |
| 16 | 20,922,789,888,000 | 1 in 20.9 trillion |
Those numbers are the reason a twelve-team league never needs to worry about the same order coming up twice: even running the draw every year, repeating one specific order is a once-in-479-million event. What leagues do worry about is fairness in a different sense - that every team has the same chance of the first pick, and that nobody can reroll until they like the result.
Entering your team names
- Type or paste your team names into the box, one per line (up to 16 teams).
- Click Randomize Order to shuffle them into a numbered draft order.
- Read the Snake preview to see how rounds 1-3 reverse the order each round.
- Click Copy Results and paste the order into your league's group chat or message board.
Draw once, then publish the result
- Randomize two or three times and share the screen so the whole league can verify it is fair.
- Use a call or voice chat while randomizing so everyone watches it happen live.
- For dynasty and keeper leagues, save the agreed order for future seasons once the group signs off.
The shuffle behind this page is the standard one: it walks the list from the end and swaps each name with a randomly chosen earlier position, which gives every possible order exactly the same probability. That detail matters because the obvious shortcut - sorting the list with a random comparator - does not do that, and produces some orders noticeably more often than others. If a league has ever suspected its draw was rigged, a biased shuffle is the usual culprit, and it is invisible because the output still looks random.
Two habits make a draw credible. Draw once and keep the result, rather than rerolling because somebody dislikes their slot; and record the order somewhere everyone can see before the draft starts. Once the order is set, deciding what to do with each slot is a separate question - the fantasy points calculator covers scoring, and the guide to PPR versus standard scoring explains why the answer changes with your league's settings.
Most leagues pair the drawn order with a snake draft, and the two are worth thinking about together. In a snake draft the order reverses every round, so the team that picks first in round one picks last in round two and the last pick of round one comes first next time round. Over a twelve-team, fifteen-round draft each team makes fifteen picks, and the reversal is what stops the first slot from being a runaway advantage: the total value of the slots ends up close to level, which is the reason leagues bother with the snake at all. The draw decides which slot you get; the snake decides how often you pick at each end of it.
FAQ
How do I use the draft order randomizer?
Paste or type your league's team names, one per line, then click Randomize Order. The tool shuffles them into a numbered snake draft order you can copy.
What is a snake draft?
In a snake draft the order reverses every round: the manager who picks last in round 1 picks first in round 2. It keeps the draft fair no matter where you land.
How many teams does it support?
Up to 16 teams. If you enter fewer, it still works for any league size from 4 to 16 managers.
