Lorem Ipsum Generator
Generate Lorem Ipsum placeholder text by paragraphs, sentences, or words.
What this generator produces
This tool produces lorem ipsum, the placeholder text that has been used in typesetting and design for centuries. You can generate it by paragraph, by sentence or by single word, which matters because the three are used for different jobs: paragraphs to fill a layout, sentences to test wrapping, and individual words to check character counts or fill a single line.
Everything is generated locally from a built-in word list. Nothing is fetched from a server, and no text is uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose the unit you want: paragraphs, sentences or words.
- Set how many you need.
- Click Generate and copy the result into your design, mockup or template.
Where lorem ipsum actually comes from
The text is not random Latin. It is a scrambled, lightly altered excerpt from De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The famous opening line descends from a sentence about pain, roughly meaning that nobody loves or pursues pain for its own sake, and that the passage survives in the filler text by accident rather than by design.
The scrambled version has been used by printers and typesetters since around the 1500s, and it spread widely in the twentieth century: first through dry-transfer lettering sheets used by graphic designers, then through the desktop publishing programs of the 1980s and 1990s, which shipped with it built in. That is the real reason it is everywhere - not because it is especially good, but because it was already in the tool everyone used.
The standard passage is 69 words long, and that is the entire vocabulary this generator draws from: it takes those words and reassembles them, which is why the output reads plausibly while saying nothing. A handful of them (ut, dolor, in, dolore) appear twice in the original, so the pool holds 63 distinct words.
Why designers use placeholder text
- It reads as language without being readable. Latin-shaped text has a plausible mix of long and short words, so line lengths and paragraph rhythm look realistic.
- It keeps attention on the layout. Reviewers cannot argue about wording that has no meaning, so a spacing or hierarchy problem stays visible.
- It is instantly recognisable. Anyone opening the file can see at a glance that the copy is not final.
The counter-argument is worth taking seriously: text that looks like language but is not language can hide real layout failures. A headline that only works because the placeholder word is short, a button that only fits because the label is six characters, a card that breaks with a real product name - none of that shows up until the real words arrive.
When not to use lorem ipsum
| Task | Placeholder text? | What to use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Wireframes and spacing mockups | Fine | Lorem ipsum |
| Presenting a design to a client | No | Draft copy, even rough |
| Accessibility testing | No | Real content with real headings |
| SEO or indexation checks | No | Real content |
| Stress-testing long words and localization | No | Text from the target language |
| Checking exact character limits | Partly | Words mode, or a real example |
Two of those rows deserve a sentence. Screen readers will attempt to pronounce Latin, which makes it a poor way to test a page's reading order or heading structure. And a page that ships with placeholder text still in place reads to a search engine as unfinished - which is a good reason to grep your templates before launch.
Choosing how much to generate
Placeholder text is most useful when the amount is roughly right, so these rules of thumb save a round of trimming. The ranges below are the ones this generator actually produces - a sentence is built from 6 to 15 words, and a paragraph from 3 to 6 of them:
| Unit | Typical size | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 sentence | 6 to 15 words | Captions, list items, card descriptions |
| 1 paragraph | 3 to 6 sentences, 18 to 90 words | Body copy blocks |
| 3 paragraphs | roughly 140 words on average | A section of an article or a product page |
| Words mode | Exactly the count you type | Filling to a character or word limit |
Better filler when lorem ipsum is the wrong choice
There is a middle ground between meaningless Latin and polished final copy, and it is usually the best choice for anything a real person will read:
- Topic-relevant dummy copy. Sentences that describe the actual product in plain, obviously-unfinished language. Layout stress is realistic and nobody is misled.
- Real copy, written badly and early. The fastest way to find out that the headline is too long is to write the headline.
- Words from the target language. If the site ships in German or Japanese, test with German or Japanese: word length and line breaking behave completely differently, and Latin filler will never show you that.

FAQ
Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
It is derived from real Latin, but the version used as filler is scrambled and altered. It comes from a passage in Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, with words moved and changed so that it reads as language without carrying a coherent message.
Is lorem ipsum bad for SEO?
Not by itself, as long as it is temporary. The problem is shipping it: a page whose visible text is still placeholder has nothing to rank for, and it reads as an unfinished page to both visitors and search engines.
Why not just use real text?
For wireframes, placeholder text keeps reviewers focused on layout instead of wording. For anything a real person will judge - a client presentation, an accessibility review, a localization test - real or realistic copy is a better choice.
Does the generator work offline?
Yes. The text is assembled in your browser from a built-in word list, so there are no network requests and nothing you generate is uploaded anywhere.
